American Red Cross Shallow Water Lifeguarding
Learn the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies in shallow water up to 6 feet. This course also covers care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses. The course is spread over multiple days and includes testing of hands-on skills, as well as comprehension on written exams.
Prerequisities
- American Red Cross lifeguarding students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class.
- Students must also pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking our courses:
- Swim 50 yards, complete a two-minute tread or float using just legs, and swim another 50 yards.
- Complete a timed event within 50 seconds to:
- Swim 20 yards to retrieve a 10-pound object
- Walk or swim back 20 yards holding the object with both hands.
Please note that lifeguard classes require a minimum of 5 participants. In accordance with American Red Cross standards, we are unable to facilitate the course if this minimum is not met. We will alert participants at least 48 hours in advance if enrollment does not meet this threshold and provide alternative options for certification.
To complete the course and receive certification, you must:
- Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions
- Actively participate in all course activities
- Demonstrate proficiency in all skills
- Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80%
- Pass the final skill assessments
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certification for Shallow Water Lifeguarding (for pools up to 6 feet) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid that is valid for two years.
